Electric carmaker, Tesla, is recalling 134,951 Model X and Model S vehicles because they might have faulty touchscreens. All of those affected are cars built before March 2018 and come equipped with 8GB media cards.
Elektrek reports that Tesla has begun emailing customers to inform them that their cars are being recalled, although the whole thing is voluntary.
“Tesla has decided to voluntarily recall certain Model S and Model X vehicles built before March 2018 that are equipped with an 8GB embedded MultiMediaCard (eMMC) in the media control unit because the eMMC may malfunction due to accumulated wear,” the email read.
Those who do choose to have the work carried out will also benefit from an upgrade to 64GB of storage, free of charge.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) wrote a letter to Tesla last month, urging it to act over the potential for the cars to suffer failures of their touchscreens. Given those screens are how users interact with almost the entire car experience, a failure can be catastrophic.
Tesla has, however, also told users that it has rolled out a software update to deal with the issue – one that’s caused by the in-car storage effectively running out of space.
If you own one of the affected cars we’d definitely suggest letting Tesla carry out the work, even if you haven’t had any issues yet.
