Subscribe to our channel! rupt.ly/subscribe Newborn loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta carettas) hatched on the Iztuzu beach in Dalyan, Mugla, and began crawling towards the sea, in what the Sea Turtle Research Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre (DEKAMER) described on Saturday as "record" numbers, due to the coronavirus pandemic leaving beaches emptier than usual. "This year, be it because of people being confined at home due to COVID and not going to beaches, and because turtles found very suitable nesting conditions, we can say that the number of nests broke records, be it at this beach or at other beaches we work at. The number of nests which was 500-600 over the past years, is currently more than 750," explained Yakup Kaska, the president of DEKAMER. Using their natural instincts, the hatchlings advance towards the sea as soon as they emerge from their nests, in the sand. ''Hatchlings that make it to the sea wander in the water for 25 years. We actually call it 'lost years.' The reason we call it 'lost years,' is because we do not have much information. Based on the current of the water, they go up and down, and rotate in the Mediterranean Sea," said Kaska, before adding that only one out of 1,000 hatchlings, only one returns to the same beach to nest.
